Enamel boasts the status of being the hardest substance in the body. This is rightfully so; it bares the burden of a lifetime of smashing and grinding food, all while protecting the sensitive internal structures of the tooth. Tough as it is, though, enamel isn’t invincible. It can be worn down over time, causing tooth sensitivity, tooth decay, gum disease, and all kinds of other health problems. How does enamel ware down, and what can you do to prevent this? This article will cover several common habits that can damage enamel and what you can do to help preserve your pearly whites. Sugars and Starches Our modern diets full of sugary, starchy foods can cause more harm than just heart disease and weight gain. As it turns out, the natural bacteria found in our mouths love sugar and starch just as much as we do, and they feast on the sugars that get stuck to our teeth after eating. The by-product of their merrymaking, however, is harsh acids that are bad news for both enamel and gums. Acidic Drinks To make matters worse, sugar isn’t the only enamel eroding ingredient we should be worried about from our beverages. Several common […]

Have you replaced your toothbrush lately? Most experts recommend you don’t use a toothbrush longer than 3 to 4 months, as the bristles can begin to fall out or wear down, decreasing cleaning effectiveness. Before you make your next trip to the drug store, however, you might be interested in mixing things up a bit by trying out a new type of toothbrush. In addition to the standard manual variety we’re all familiar with, there’s actually a wide selection of different toothbrush designs you may not be familiar with, each with unique advantages and purposes. It’s normal to become lazy or form bad habits if you go through the same routine every night, so it may be a good idea to learn a new brushing technique to re-focus your efforts on your brushing. Read on to learn about some unique toothbrush designs! Electronic The most commonly seen design after standard manual brushes, the electronic toothbrush has bristles that are spun in circles by a motor. While tests show that electronic brushes aren’t actually more effective at plaque removal than manual, many models have pressure sensors and timers that can greatly improve your cleaning techniques. They come in a variety of […]

If you live in Central Texas, you have a few choices when it comes to dental care. You could look for a small town dentist close to your home, or you could opt to commute to San Antonio or Austin to open up all the dentistry options a big city has to offer. You could try to find a hidden gem in a locally operated office, or you could settle for a time-tested dental chain. So what decision should you go with? The dentist you choose will no doubt become an important relationship in your life—a sort of partner in your and possibly your family’s dental care—so it’s understandable to want to make the best decision possible. Ultimately, the best dentist for you depends on your individual needs, schedule, and comfort zone. A dentist office isn’t one-size-fits-all, as you need to feel comfortable around not only the dentist, but also the staff and office. That being said, below you can find some general things to keep in mind when choosing a dentist office. Convenience & Accessibility One of the first things you should consider is how easy it will be for you to plan and make trips to a certain […]

Most people are familiar with the term “wisdom teeth,” but not many know why their third molars carry that nickname. They have been called “teeth of wisdom” since the 17th century, and were referred to as “wisdom teeth” around the turn of the 19th century. Third molars often come in much latter than a person’s normal adult teeth, generally after about 17 years of age (or around the time the person reaches adulthood). Many who already have their wisdom teeth (or had them removed) can attest that wisdom teeth can be painful, while others experience little or no discomfort. It’s generally accepted among those who study languages that they received their nickname because of how much later in life they tend to come in, generally when a person has matured and is “wiser” than when their adult teeth came in. Science has seemed to confirm that our ancestors were pretty close, as recent research has shown that the brain doesn’t reach full maturity until about 25 years old. Many people often ask if they should have their wisdom teeth removed. If you’re experiencing discomfort due to wisdom teeth (or any discomfort in your mouth) you should see a dentist as […]

Tooth decay is the result of having an excess amount of acid-producing bacteria inside the mouth, which leads to cavities. Tooth decay normally occurs when the amount of healthy activity the mouth is outweighed by the disease causing activity; it is not directly linked to genetics like some may believe. Be sure to brush your teeth and take care of them properly: Brush for at LEAST two minutes, if not more (and give equal attention to each part of your mouth) Use proper technique (avoid big horizontal strokes, brush up and down and/or in circles) Use the proper toothpaste (it should contain fluoride) Brush twice a day Floss daily Use a good mouthwash (antiseptic or antibacterial) If you do all of the above, you’re on the right track for better oral health. However, it’s important to stay away from harmful activities that can work against your mouth: smoking, drinking acidic drinks too often, taking medications that cause dry mouth, and not treating frequent heartburn or acid reflux. It’s a good idea to talk with your dentist about how to reduce tooth decay. They may recommend techniques or tips about how to maintain saliva production (saliva helps maintain a neutral pH […]

Toothbrushes are notorious for collecting millions of bacteria. It’s the perfect breeding ground for these little critters, and they thrive and multiply as time goes on. Toothpaste doesn’t kill them, and rinsing the bristles with water doesn’t get rid of the majority of them. According to the ADA (American Dental Association), bacterial infestations can develop within a month of daily brushing. What’s more, if the toothbrush wasn’t properly sterilized before being packaged and shipped, your toothbrush will likely be home to a colony of bacteria before you ever even open it. The bacteria make their home deep inside the toothbrush bristles, and once they’re there they don’t move out. Some of them can survive extreme conditions, so freezing your toothbrush or microwaving it for a few seconds won’t get rid of them either (and we don’t recommend microwaving plastic!). When you’re sick, your mouth often has excess bacteria running amok. When you brush your teeth, your toothbrush will collect these nasty bacteria, so it’s a good idea to use an old toothbrush while you’re sick and throw it away when you start feeling better. Otherwise there’s a chance you’ll reintroduce these germs into your system! In order to combat these […]

We are taught from a very young age to take good care of our teeth and, primarily, to make sure we brush them regularly. But is there a possibility all the brushing has been doing just as much harm as good? The answer is yes. There can be too much of a good thing when it comes to brushing your teeth. Brushing your teeth regularly is definitely recommended, but dentists warn that there is such a things as overbrushing. Many people brush their teeth too harshly and this can lead to sensitive teeth and receding gums. Brushing too vigorously can wear down the enamel on your teeth, but teeth are fairly strong and the main concern with overbrushing concerns the gums. Your gums are much softer and more sensitive than your teeth and is much easier to damage. Many people through overbrushing push their gums back, revealing the sensitive root area of the tooth. Receding gums are not only painful but also can lead to other health concerns including periodontal disease and cavities on the roots of the teeth and may lead to the need for treatments such as fillings, root canals and tooth extraction. According to the Wall Street […]

Every time we go to the dentist we are reminded about not flossing our teeth (unless you are one of the rare people that actually flosses). Often we will keep the routine up for a week or two before it falls to the wayside. Despite the norm of neglecting flossing, it is actually extremely important and it may be something to reexamine. What exactly is floss? Dental floss is a tool used to remove food and bacteria build-up from in-between the teeth. It is used to clean in the gaps which are not reachable with regular tooth brushing. Brushing can clean the surface of your teeth but flossing is important to prevent plaque build-up in the hard to reach places. Plaque build-up can lead not only to cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease, but also general bad breath. So how often should you floss? It is more important to take your time and floss correctly than it is to floss often. It is good practice to floss at least once a day very slowly to make sure you clean your entire mouth. Flossing at all is obviously better than never, but if you don’t floss every day, you won’t reap […]

We all want the best for our kids, and that includes insuring that they’re happy and healthy. Every parent wants their child to be as healthy as they can possibly be. Studies show that overall body health is heavily related to oral hygiene, so when you’re prioritizing your child’s health, make sure to prioritize their dental habits! Your child’s baby teeth are at risk for decay from the moment they come in which usually starts around 6 month. Tooth decay in infants and toddlers is often called Baby Bottle Tooth Decay. This decay can sometimes become so bad that the teeth cannot be saved and the teeth must be removed entirely. But this tooth decay is preventable and the most effective prevention is proper teeth cleaning. When your child is a few days old, begin wiping its gums with a clean, moist gauze pad or washcloth to help wash away bacteria. Teeth brushing should begin as soon as they start getting their teeth in. Use a fluoride toothpaste in small amounts and brush teeth thoroughly twice a day. From ages 3 to 6, use a little bit more tooth paste, about the size of a pea, and still brush thoroughly […]

Everything you need to know to make the switch to an electric toothbrush: Electric toothbrushes have been gaining popularity since the 1990s and are recommended by most dentists. Here are some of the benefits of switching to an electric toothbrush: Electric toothbrushes require less physical effort to operate, making them easier to use and a preferred method of oral hygiene for many. This is especially true for those with arthritis, physical disabilities, or for small children. Parents can be better assured that their children are getting better quality cleaning with an electric brush than with a manual brush, even if their child hasn’t mastered the tool or technique themselves. Electric toothbrushes come with multiple modes or settings for all dental situations, including but not limited to: A standard setting that applies the recommended tooth brushing pressure and speed A setting designed specifically to be gentler on those with sensitive teeth or gums A gum massaging setting to soothe gums and help prevent gum disease, gingivitis, and bad breath Electric toothbrushes provide better oral hygiene because they administer many more strokes per minute than could ever be had with a manual toothbrush. If you really want the most brush strokes per […]

Daily brushing is essential for maintaining proper oral hygiene. But brushing alone isn’t enough… there’s no substitute for flossing your teeth. Many believe that if they use a mouthwash after brushing there’s no need to floss. While mouthwash is great, it can’t get little pieces of food and gunk out from deep between your teeth in the way that flossing can. As a wise dentist once said: “Floss the teeth you want to keep.” ~dentist, quoted by Nick Crocker If you aren’t a regular flosser you’ll likely expereince a bit of discomfort and bleeding when you’re first starting out. This is fairly normal, and generally gets better over a short period (if it doesn’t, be sure to schedule an appointment with a local dentist!). After a week or so of daily flossing, you should notice your teeth start to feel cleaner. In order to build this habit, there are a few tricks you can test out and see if any of them work for you: Anchor: Add a new habit to an old one. In this case, brushing your teeth is (hopefully!) a daily habit you perform in the morning and evening. At night when you brush your teeth, start flossing right […]

This is a follow up to our previous post, “Creating A Flossing Habit to Keep Your Teeth Clean.” Sure, a flossing habit is important, but so is proper flossing technique. We’ve put together some quick tips to ensure you get the most benefit out of flossing. Before we dive in to actual technique, let’s quickly recap the benefits of regularly flossing: Flossing removes plaque and food particles in nooks and crannies between your teeth that toothbrushes can’t normally reach. If this build-up isn’t removed, it can lead to a number of problems, including halitosis (bad breath), gum disease and tooth decay. Types of floss that are best for cleaning your teeth: Nylon (waxed or unwaxed) – cheaper, but can tear when getting in to tight spots. PTFE – More expensive, but made with a single filament, making it more durable. “Flossers” – Little disposable plastic flossers that hold a small stretch of floss. Great for ease-of-use. Flossing Technique: To properly floss, use about a foot to a foot and a half of floss, with all but about an inch wound around your middle or index fingers–or use a flosser (see above). Slide the floss gently up and down between your […]

Bad breath can be embarrassing. Fortunately, there are a number of simple ways to fight it. A lot of instances of bad breath can be avoided with standard proper oral hygiene. In this post we’ll take a look at seven easy ways to combat bad breath… some will fairly “common sense,” but a few may surprise you… 1) Brush Twice Daily You hear this advice all the time, and for good reason. At the very least, you should brush your teeth for 2+ minutes when you wake up, and right before you go to bed. You may also want to brush after a potent meal (especially if the ingredients contained onions, garlic, etc.). 2) Floss Daily Regular flossing is important for a number of reasons, especially when it comes to reducing bad breath. Flossing helps remove food and gunk between your teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach. If left unchecked, these tiny parcels become a breeding ground for bacteria, which can quickly lead to bad breath. 3) Avoid Tobacco We all know smoking is bad for your health… but did you know that smoking is known to cause bad breath? And not just that after-cigarette smell, the smoke can dry out […]

Dental hygiene is an important part of daily life. Everyone wants their pearly whites to stand out in pictures, and no one wants to have to schedule extra procedures with their dentist. To keep the visits as just simple checkups, the right toothpaste could make all the difference. With the massive amount of variety available today it may seem challenging to know which one to choose. By following a few suggestions you can make sure you are using the best product for your teeth. Speak With Your Dentist It may seem somewhat obvious, but expert advice is usually the best. During your next visit to your dentist discuss your personal needs. Many people have problems with tartar, while others simply want to prevent cavities. Seeing as they spent much of their working day determining what problems people have with their teeth, dentists will always be able to tell you about problem areas that you should try to improve. For example, gum health is something many do not realize on their own. Problems like this can be improved with the right kind of toothpaste. Taking the advice of a professional is a great way to make sure your teeth are cared […]

Food and drinks can wreak havoc on your teeth. Sugar-filled snacks and beverages can cause cavities, increase plaque, and cause a host of other oral issues that could result in costly dental work. Choosing the correct beverages and snacks can not only promote oral health, but it can also ensure that the only dental visits required will be those for routine cleaning and x-rays. This is not about how to avoid dental care. This will guide patients on how to promote continued oral health through appropriate daily habits. By eating and drinking things that promote oral health, the overall physical health of a patient may also improve. What is it that actually causes damage? Simply put, the sugar in foods and beverages is what causes serious tooth damage. It feeds a bacteria in the mouth that creates an acid that destroys tooth enamel. These natural acids eat away at tooth enamel over time. While patients may not feel the burn of acid, that does not mean that acid is not present. It will eat tooth enamel over time, causing severe and costly damage to the patient’s teeth. Patients do not recognize this damage until it is too late. Being aware […]

About Thumb Sucking Thumb sucking is considered, by many, to be a very natural occurrence for children. When a child sucks their thumb, they may be reducing tension for themselves. Thumb sucking can help an infant to cope better, and it can help soothe your child to sleep. Unfortunately, thumb sucking may also pose problems with a child’s teeth. The issues may arise when a child begins to develop their teeth. It is common for children to quit sucking their thumbs when their teeth start to come in, but many children who do not quit on their own when teeth begin to emerge. Many children stop this habit between the ages of two years old and four years old. School-age children will stop when peer pressure begins. Age Two and Possible Negative Effects Some children are still sucking their thumbs when their second birthday rolls around. There have been studies conducted that have shown the negative effects that this has for some children. Their jaw can actually be affected. If you have a two-year-old who is still sucking their thumb, it may be a good idea to consult a dentist to determine if this is affecting them in a negative […]

It can be alarming when you are brushing your teeth and you notice blood begin to emanate from your gums around your teeth. It might be easiest to just ignore it, but there is always an underlying cause; taking corrective action could prevent a minor problem from turning into a more serious dilemma. Bleeding gums can be an early sign of gum disease or inflammation caused by the buildup of plaque on your teeth. It can even be caused by brushing too vigorously and/or using a toothbrush with bristles that are too hard. Whatever the reason, it is a good idea to consider some of the following ideas for maintaining healthy gums. Practice Better Dental Care Sometimes we get busy, and the care that we put into our dental routine may suffer. If you are skimping on the number of times that you are flossing in a week, it can lead to plaque buildup and inflammation, which can cause bleeding gums. There can also be bacteria lodged between your teeth that a toothbrush can’t remove alone. Make sure to take the time to brush and floss each day as a normal part of your dental care routine. You should also […]

Between the ages of 17 to 25, it is likely that young adults will experience the growth of their “wisdom teeth”. Despite their dignified moniker, these third molars do not bring a lot of wisdom or comfort at all. They tend to grow in crooked or overcrowded mouths, leading dentists to suggest that they’re removed as soon as possible in most people. The removal process, however, is far less painful and complicated when you have the wisdom teeth extracted at a younger age, so it’s important to catch the problem sooner rather than later. Below are some of the signs that will tell you when it will be necessary to have your wisdom teeth extracted. Limited Space for Eruption of Wisdom Teeth When you have a limited space to allow the wisdom teeth to erupt in your mouth, the dentist will note this sign and advise you to have your wisdom teeth extracted. The reason behind this decision is that the areas of the gum surrounding it will be difficult to clean. It will be done to prevent inflammation and infection of the gum which can be easily spread to the other parts of the gum and teeth. Crowding of […]

How To Find a Good Dentist There are a lot of ways to find a dentist that will work for you. You may be wondering how it can work the best for you. All you need is a little guidance, and you will have the best experience you can. Talk to Friends One of the best ways to find a dentist that will be good for you is to talk to those you are friends with. They probably have had some dentists work with them. This can be the best way to get an idea of what dentist is going to work for you. This also means you will have an idea of the dentists to avoid as well. Your friends may also have heard other experiences from other people who they know. That is another reason to talk to them about dentists. Look at Reviews Another great idea is to look at reviews of that dentist to see what people thought of their service. If you are looking online, you may be able to find a rating on their services as well as how they treat their patients to help you decide if you should go to this dentist […]

The Dentist Is Necessary To Monitor Oral Health Overall oral health is important for many reasons. In order to keep your mouth healthy and your teeth intact you must be vigilant about oral hygiene and educate yourself about common oral health issues that can affect your teeth and the surrounding tissue. Dental issues can affect your overall health; they can cause problems such as diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke, heart disease, and possibly even Alzheimer’s. Gum Disease One of the most common oral health issues is gum disease. Gum disease can cause shrinkage of gum tissue and bone loss. Some symptoms of gum disease include bleeding and infections. Gum disease causes severe infections that can cause serious health problems. The patient may be unaware of the festering infection, but if you experience any symptoms of gum disease, you should see a dentist for treatment immediately. Gum disease infections are dangerous and should not be ignored. Periodontal bacteria are created by food particles that are lodged in between the teeth. The food creates bacterial growth that can then enter the bloodstream and move to other organs of the body. This type of infection can cause the some of the previously mentioned health issues. […]

Everyone wants a great looking smile, and most people probably believe they make a decent effort to take care of their teeth. Unfortunately, despite regular brushing and flossing, many people find themselves dissatisfied with their teeth. Perhaps even worse they may need detailed dental work done to correct problems. There are some specific behaviors that can cause damage to your teeth overtime. Here are ten of the worst behaviors for teeth. Sugary Foods and Beverages Sodas and other sugary drinks such as fruit juice can increase the risk of tooth decay. Sodas can have up to 11 teaspoons of sugar per serving. They also contain phosphoric and citric acids, which eat away at tooth enamel. Oral bacteria love sugar and they can produce cavity-causing acid as they digest. Using a Hard-Bristled Toothbrush May people believe that a firm toothbrush is a good thing. This is just not the case. As you get older roots become exposed because the gums move. This can make your teeth and gums much more sensitive. Ultimately a brush with too-firm bristles may irritate the gums and lead to sensitive teeth. Not Brushing, Flossing, or Rinsing Properly A common mistake that many people make is not […]

While the idea of getting braces is usually not met with joy, the end result is worth the process. Summertime may, in fact, be the best time to get braces for several reasons. 1. Less Stress Once the school year begins, children do have responsibilities to meet. There is homework, of course, but may include other activities they enjoy participating in such as sports, band or chorus. Although they may even enjoy school and some of these activities, there is some stress related to them. Most students require medical physicals early in the school year to attend school or for sports participation. While visiting the dentist may be one of these necessities, it would be easier to get the dental checkup before the school year begins. If braces are necessary, as determined by the dentist and an orthodontist, summertime is a good time to begin wearing them. The stresses of school are not in place yet and it gives the child some time to get accustomed to them before school starts. Since the summer months are generally less stressful for parents and kids, obtaining braces during that time of year, if possible, allows a time of adjustment before school begins. […]

Many adults find it difficult to get through the day without the aid of coffee. Coffee is a delicious way to wake up in the morning and keep the afternoon fatigue at bay. Coffee is a morning necessity for a large portion of the population, but it has the ability to affect more than just your body’s energy levels. One easily overlooked area that is affected by coffee consumption is your teeth. Unsightly Stains The most noticeable effect of coffee on your teeth is the stain that gets left behind. Coffee is a strong, dark substance, so it has a tendency to cling to materials with light pigments. There are several methods to combat teeth stains from coffee. One is to simply reduce the strength of your coffee. A weak cup of coffee won’t stain your teeth as much as a strong cup of coffee will. If you don’t want to sacrifice the strength of your brew, consider carrying around a small water bottle that you can sip from while you’re drinking your coffee. This will help keep the acid from lingering on your teeth until you can brush them. Enamel Damage Coffee is naturally acidic. Biologically, this helps protect […]

When you think of emotions and how they impact you on a daily basis, you are not likely to think about dental issues. Stress, anxiety, depression, and other health conditions linked to your emotional wellbeing can impact your smile if they are left undetected and remain untreated. It is not always possible to remove the things in our lives that cause negative emotions, so it is important to address stress and properly treat individual symptoms in order to protect your health and your smile. Teeth Grinding Bruxism, or grinding your teeth in your sleep, can be very damaging to your teeth. You may not be aware that you are grinding your teeth unless a partner informs you that you are. It can cause everything from a dull ache in the jaw to permanent damage over a period time. Most damage to teeth due to bruxism is preventable. If you know the symptoms of bruxism, you are more likely to receive medical attention and prevent continuing dental damage. According to WebMD, symptoms of bruxism include: “a dull, constant headache or sore jaw when you wake up.” The discomfort and tension in the jaw may go away shortly after you begin your […]

During pregnancy, expectant mothers may experience a wide variety of changes in both hormones and health. At times, oral health may be overlooked during pregnancy, but it is vital to take proper care of your mouth. During pregnancy, existing dental conditions may worsen, or new conditions may pop up. The following are a few common dental conditions associated with pregnancy: Pregnancy Gingivitis and Periodontitis Gingivitis symptoms are red swollen tender gums that easily bleed. The growth of bacteria causes the disease as a result of increased hormones. Periodontitis is a progression of gingivitis where tooth loosens and bone is lost, due to the plaque that releases destructive toxins. Excessive bacteria may induce premature labor and thus preterm babies and low-birthweight infants. Enamel Erosion Morning sickness is characterized by frequent vomiting that leads to enamel erosion due to gastric acid left in the mouth that attack the teeth. Pregnancy Tumors These are lumps that appear on the gum and between teeth. The swellings are harmless and not cancerous. Most tumors regress after childbirth though others may cause severe pain and even bleeding prompting their removal. Increased Risk of Tooth Decay A pregnant woman is prone to cavities if they eat more […]

Oral cancer is a growing problem today, and it’s important to have oral cancer screenings done annually. Three very good reasons to have your dentist perform an oral cancer screening have to do with the increasing incidence of oral cancer in young people, and the screenings are quick, painless and inexpensive. The Young Are Increasingly Vulnerable Many people associate oral cancer with older people. Dentists are now seeing an increase in oral cancer cases among young adults. Some theorize the increase in oral cancer among young adults may be linked to their increasing exposure to the human papillomavirus. HPV has been linked to oral cancer and medical professionals have identified people between the ages of 25 and 50 years of age to be of particularly high risk for developing oral cancer as a result of it. Screening Are Simple The oral cancer screening test is fast, painless and affordable. It can be done in a dentist’s office in 5 minutes. That means there is no reason to stop people from having the screenings done. The reasonable costs of the tests means that just about anyone can afford to have the test done and give themselves the peace of mind of […]

Game day is fun to watch with a group of friends. Many people find that watching the game can be even more fun when watching it with snacks as well as friends. However, many game day snacks can be calorie laden and filled with fat. This doesn’t have to be the case at all. As those who do online fundraising tips know, there are many ways to make such game day snacks a better eating choice. Incorporate Vegetables Any good diet is one that ideally has at least five servings of fruit and vegetables each day. Any good party holder knows that people love the crunch and texture of vegetables. They’re also low in fat and calories. Help make them even more appealing by blanching the vegetables before serving them with a low fat dip. Blanching means abruptly placing them in hot water. This will brighten the colors immediately and make them easier to digest at the same time. Make Your Own As so many people who help do online fundraising tips, homemade is best. Even if you don’t do much cooking, you can always learn. Making your own means you control the amount of calories in the food. You […]

Cosmetic Dentistry May Not Break Your Bank There are many circumstances in which insurance will pay for your cosmetic procedure. This means that you may not be thousands of dollars out of pocket as you may have been thinking prior. Insurance is especially likely to help cover costs if the procedure is necessary to improving your health or quality of life. Your Confidence Will Greatly Improve If you have a poor smile you will likely be thinking about it every second of the day. You’ll question your interaction with strangers, friends, and even family. You may have difficulty eating which forces you to eat your food differently than those around you. When you undergo a cosmetic procedure (or set of procedures) to fix your smile, many of your insecurities will just simply disappear. This is because cosmetic dentistry is designed to make your smile look and feel naturally beautiful. You Will Make Better First Impressions Often times the first thing that a person notices about another person is their smile. Having a smile that is crooked, yellow, or is missing teeth will all create a negative impression. While others try to act like it does not bother them, it actually […]

The Affordable Care Act (known by opponents and proponents alike as “Obamacare”) was a bill aimed at reforming health coverage in this country. It did so via 900 pages of mechanisms, and you don’t need to be on any certain side to recognize this is a large bill that most people will benefit from having it explained and condensed. Does Obamacare include Dental Insurance? The short answer is no, except for children, in a way. Children must be offered dental coverage under any ACA-approved plan. A child must be offered dental by any employers or insurance agents, but the difference between health insurance and dental is that you may refuse it. With health insurance, if parents do not purchase a plan from the insurance companies for their child they will be fined. So while it is absolutely needed that they offer it, you do not have to buy it. Many of the new laws and advantages insurance was given by ACA does not count for dental plans. Cost assistance is not available to everyone, but if you are one of the few who could have their insurance partially covered, you can use that towards dental. But unlike health insurance, if […]

Many people assume that the ancient people of the world unilaterally ignored dental health. But the reality is that many had toothbrushes and toothpastes, even if they took a crude setting, and took preventative measures to prevent decay. As well, some cultures consisted on diets that were far less acidic and contributed far less to decay. The level of understanding would have depended on the same thing as everything else, the era and location. Culture is not a monolith, as the popular saying goes. But as much variation as there can be in one group of people, there is even more variation among different groups, times, and places. There is a long history of humans using simple toothbrushes made up of different materials and plants. These date back at least as far back as 3,000 B.C. The sites where we found the first toothbrushes were the first toothbrushes that they made first were constructed from frayed tree branches. These were then chewed on to brush, for its abrasiveness. Bird feathers, twigs, animal bones and porcupine quills were also used for different crude brushes. Other cultures, like the Greeks and the Romans, as well as the Qin Dynasty, used what were […]

We all know to floss, to brush two times a day while singing our ABC’s, to use mouthwash, and to avoid candy and soda. But there is more to dental care than that. Candy and soda are not the only things that can have an effect on our oral health. There are certain foods we can eat that actually have a positive impact on our teeth, and even more things that cause harm. Some of the things, both good and bad, are things that common wisdom would make you expect to have little effect. Among the things that hurt our teeth are things that some consider to be healthy. Anything with sugar, and anything that makes our mouth acidic, can hurt our teeth. Candy and soda are the main culprits, but it is more than that. Cookies, pastries and even juice can all have high levels of sugar. While fructose is the worst kind of sugar, plain cane sugar is often times not all that much better. In fact, all carbohydrates eventually break down into sugar and acids. High carb food like bread and breakfast cereals are not something you would expect to be unhealthy. Similarly, certain fruits, like bananas […]

Over the Counter and Household Teeth Whitening Techniques and Products Everyone wants to have teeth as white as celebrities, but there are a lot of options you may not know about. We will be going over a few ways to whiten teeth at home. There are a lot of products that are sold over the counter that can really help to whiten your teeth. These include the ones widely advertised, and the alternatives sold at the store. Chief among these are the whitening strips. The brand doesn’t necessarily matter, but it is normally a good idea to compare the ingredients (both active and inactive, but pay particular attention to the active ingredients) in the off-brand to the name brand products. These are the ones you pull out of the packaging and mold to the shape of your teeth. They normally are applied every night. There are also a lot of different products that are sitting around the house, some that are actually even in toothpaste. One common one is baking soda and lemon juice mixed into a combined paste. Baking soda is advertised as something that essentially scrubs out dirt. So you are going to want to use baking soda […]

Wearing braces is important and can yield positive results; results that can change your life. However, wearing braces can be uncomfortable at times, especially when the wires are adjusted. The process of creating braces To ensure that your braces turn out well, an orthodontist, during follow up visits, will adjust wires and monitor the progress to ensure that your teeth are moving as they should toward their expected positions. During regular visits, an orthodontist may tighten or replace the thin wires that run from bracket to bracket. Sometimes the added pressure that is put on teeth and gums from the tightened wires can cause irritation and discomfort. When this happens, mild bleeding, inflammation or tooth sensitivity occurs. The pain that occurs is temporary and normal. Tips that lessen pain and sensitivity There are several tips that will help reduce pain and sensitivity such as using ice packs. If newly tightened braces cause soreness, try applying a cold ice pack to the areas that are uncomfortable. Ice will reduce swelling, inflammation and reduce pain. Another tip is to seek cold foods and drinks. Popsicles and ice cream not only taste great, they also act as a numbing agent and reduce inflammation. Swishing with salt water also […]

1. Acidic foods and drinks Did you know that citrus, tomatoes, lemon, grapefruit, kiwi, and many of your favorite fruit juices can cause pain? Ouch! No one likes pain in their teeth. The acidity in these foods and drinks could erode the enamel and expose the dentin, which is the tender layer beneath. A great solution is to cut the acidity level by drinking milk or eating cheese afterward. Who Knew? 2. Brushing Too Hard Brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can wreak havoc on your gums causing sensitivity and pain. Over time this causes damage and wears away the protective layers such as the enamel. Try investing in a soft-bristled toothbrush and try brushing more gently. 3. Tooth Whitening/Whitening Toothpaste It’s nice to have a big bright smile, but tooth whitening and some toothpaste can cause sensitivity to your Pearly Whites. Many whitening products include peroxide-based bleaching solutions which can eventually cause pain. Consult with your Dentist for the best results for teeth whitening. 4. Excessive Mouthwash We all want a minty fresh mouth, but using too much mouthwash could make your mouth sore. Most over-the-counter mouthwashes contain alcohol, and other chemicals which can cause sensitivity. Try […]

Addictions We’ve all heard of addictions. People can be addicted to alcohol or drugs, but what about sugar? Is that a real thing? It is, and more and more people are finding themselves addicted to sugar. The first step to overcoming an addiction, whatever the culprit is, is to recognize that you have one. If you don’t know you need help, then you can’t seek out help or fix yourself. Once you realize you’re addicted to sugar, you can begin taking steps to overcome it. It won’t be easy, but it is possible and with dedication you can become one of the many people who have beat their addiction to sugar. Why is Sugar So Addictive? One of the reasons sugar is so addictive is because consuming it actually stimulates the pleasure centers of the brain. When you try to get off sugar, your feel-good brain chemical, dopamine, will drop and you can get anxiety and even the shakes. You may experience other symptoms, such as headaches or irritability, as well. Since sugar is in virtually everything that we eat, it can be a real challenge to avoid. You just need to make the right choices when it comes to […]

By now, you’ve seen all of the commercials and read the countless amount of anti-smoking pamphlets and articles that tell you how bad smoking is for your body. Besides knowing what it can do to your lungs, there are a few things you should know when it comes to your teeth, tongue, lips, gums and breath. Oral Cancer If you smoke or chew tobacco, your chances of cancer are higher than most Americans. You run a risk of cancer of the tongue, mouth, gums, throat and lips. It was estimated that there were over 3,400 oral cancer cases last year alone. Men alone made up over half of those cases. According to dental hygienest Mary Bertone from the Center for Community Oral Health at the University of Manitoba, “Your risk for mouth related cancers are much higher if you are both a drinker and smoker.” The down side to this is that the diagnosis of oral cancer is not made until the cancer has advanced. This will lead to an increased amount of cancer related deaths. Gum Disease The effects of smoking on your gums is two-fold. The first is the increase of bacteria that creates plaque—this increase of plaque […]

Bone grafting has become a very routine procedure for dental implants in this day and age. If an individual loses a tooth, getting a dental implant is a great replacement option. Implants actually look and function in a manner similar to a regular tooth. More often than not, implants are undetectable. Just like other surgeries, there are necessary precautions and considerations to make before undertaking a dental implant procedure. The possibility of needing a bone graft before the dental implant is done is one of the main things that has to be determined. Bone grafting is basically the restoration of the jawbone to allow it to support the implant. A bone grafting comes in handy when your surgeon has sufficient reason to believe that you have a soft or thin jawbone. If an implant is done when a patient has this condition, then the jawbone might not support the new tooth and the procedure could result in an implant surgery failure. Bone Grafting Tissue Sources There are four main bone graft tissue sources, and they include: Autogenous – bone grafts are harvested from other parts of a person’s body, like the hip or the chin. This is always the most […]

One of the most important parts of the human body is the teeth. If properly cared for they will serve a person faithfully for their entire life. It is not unusual to find people in their 90’s that have their original teeth even though they may have been repaired along the way with fillings, bridges, or other types of dental care. The basis of good dental care is located in the gums. Keeping them healthy and in good condition is the basis of good teeth. That is why it is extremely important to avoid the pain and the plague of gum disease, also called gingivitis and periodontitis. Regular brushing and flossing of the teeth should be done gently to avoid damaging tooth enamel or causing red and swollen gums. A toothbrush should be selected that has soft bristles with blunt ends and should be used a minimum of twice a day. Signs of Gum Disease Age 30 and 40 are when the most common signs of gum disease appear. These indications include one or more of the following: Blood on the toothbrush Sensitive teeth Red, tender or swollen gums Pain when eating Loose or shifting teeth Bad taste in the […]

There are plenty of recommendations for the usual courses of oral health. Reminders to brush twice a day, to use floss, to use mouthwash. But what is rarely brought up are the huge amount of supplements available for treating various teeth issues. When you are looking into various recipes be very careful of snake oil salesmen. If there is a vial of liquid that claims to be a cure all, or has extremely vague ingredient labelling in the form of either none at all or listing herbs with no explanation of why they might help. The best remedies don’t generally tend to be just one specific chemical, but sometimes combination medicine is reasonable, when it helps with absorption or cover several bases. Just like we’ve been told that milk helps grow strong bones, the same is true for teeth. But it isn’t the milk, but the calcium and the Vitamin D inside of it. This is a perfect example of a time when combination pills are justified. A very common form of these supplements is in the form of a chocolate chew. A huge amount of Americans are actually calcium and vitamin D deficient. In a pinch, moderate milk intake […]

Everyone knows how important it is to make sure that you care for your teeth properly and on a regular basis. Did you know that your tongue needs daily care as well? Why Your Tongue Needs Cleaning There are many reasons to keep your tongue as fresh and clean as your teeth. For one, your tongue is constantly touching your teeth. Even if you have brushed and flossed adequately, if you do not provide the same cleanliness to your tongue, your routine will be less effective. Your tongue can spread bacteria left on it back onto your teeth even after brushing them. Another reason to keep your tongue clean is on behalf of your taste buds. Your tongue is covered in tiny bumps made up of taste buds. If you fail to clean your tongue properly, debris left on your tongue can actually obscure your taste buds. Keeping your tongue clean could result in being able to better taste your food. Best Tongue Cleaning Practices You probably know that it is recommended to brush your teeth at least twice daily and to floss regularly, but how should cleaning your tongue fit into your routine? Easily. Each time your brush your […]

Our discussion of supplements for improving oral health continues here today as we cover the best supplements, vitamins, and minerals for dealing with specific issues. As mentioned previously, be weary of snake oil salesmen. This includes aromatherapy, holistic medicine, and anything that has non-specific and unresearched components that make wide claims of curing dozens of different ailments. In our last discussion we went over vitamin D and calcium for helping keep your teeth and jawbone strong, and for helping them absorb by following the calcium with the vitamin D. We covered vitamin C’s ability to improve gum health and collagen production, and B3/B6/B12’s helpful effects on canker sores and inflammation. Today we will especially focus where we can on those vitamins and minerals that the general population tends to be deficient towards. As always, whatever form of supplement you take, try to stay away from those with heavy carbonation. Phosphorous Phosphorous is an ingredient, like vitamin D, that helps calcium intake into your body. It also combines to help promote general bone structure health, which includes your teeth. This is similar to vitamin D’s effects, but ultimately needs to be taken in pill form or eaten from various dairy, meat, […]

Nobody wants to be told they have a cavity, but when this occurs we can be left with the issue of which form of filling to use when we fill a hole in an individual tooth. The resulting issue means we must make a choice between a composite or amalgam filling material that will allow us the opportunity to make a decision between two extremely effective, but also extremely different forms of filling materials. A dental professional may well guide you through this decision making process as the hole in the tooth that is to be filled may be too small for the use of amalgam filling materials and require a composite to be used instead. Composite Vs Amalgam Materials The materials used in composite and amalgam materials are very different. This is largely because the two different forms of fillings were developed over half a century apart; amalgam fillings were first developed around a century ago, while composite fillings have only been in popular use for around 40 years. The composite filling has been developed to have a tooth colored appearance developed through the use of plastic resin materials that use blue light to harden them when they have […]

Having cracked or chipped teeth will affect your smile, and it may negatively impact your self-confidence. The best option for repairing chipped teeth would be a dental bond. A dental bond is one of the cheapest ways to cosmetically repair your teeth, and they are also a good option when it comes to filling in gaps between teeth. The process is relatively simple, with most cases only requiring one office visit. If you do chip your teeth, try to save those broken pieces. Saving them may make the dentist’s job easier when it comes time to repair them. The Process The material used in dental bonding is a soft, dough-like resin that is molded into the desired shape. Before the resin can stick onto the surface of the tooth it first needs to be sanded gently; sanding the surface of the tooth creates an ideal environment for the resin to fill into. A solution is then applied to the tooth that allows the resin to adhere to the surface. The process of getting a couple teeth bonded takes between 30-60 minutes. Caring For A Dental Bond Dental bonds, which are also known as tooth bonds, are also very easy to […]

Life gives us just two sets of natural teeth in life, and the first set is lost fairly early on in life, leaving you with one important set to take the utmost care of. Proper dental care and regular dental cleaning services for your teeth is vital. Without this, you could be one of the far-too-many that suffer from tooth decay, gum disease, and irreversible dental damage that can lead you down the road to dentures. The major problems that affect your teeth are vastly preventable from home or even work, making your dentist visit one of a great checkup and not bad news. The number one attacker of our precious teeth? Plaque. What is Plaque? Plaque, pronounced “plak,” is the sticky deposit that forms on teeth where bacteria rapidly reproduces. Forget to brush this morning? Brush your tongue across your teeth to feel the fuzzy growth of plaque that’s attacking your teeth right now. Why is Plaque Harmful? It may be common knowledge that plaque is bad, but why? What happens to the teeth with prolonged plaque build-up? Well, the fuzzy-like film that plaque leaves on teeth, when not brushed, flossed, or given the proper dental care services builds […]

What It Is A root canal is a comfortable and simple dental procedure that is done to restore decaying teeth. This can be performed by a dentist or a endodontist. A root canal helps you to clean out all decay from your tooth instead of getting an implant. Having a root canal is often more beneficial than getting an implant because you will keep the structure of your tooth in order to speak properly and chew easily. Some advantages of a root canal consist of: Keeping your tooth Successful chewing Normal biting, and Protection to other surrounding teeth. What Happens During a Root Canal? The root canal procedure begins with an X-Ray. This X-ray will determine the shape and size of the root canal. The X-Ray will also help find any other decaying teeth or other infections you may have. After the X-Ray is performed, your dentist or endodontist will use anesthesia to numb your tooth and other areas of your mouth. Although not all dentists use anesthesia, this helps the patient to feel more comfortable and at ease. Next, a rubber dam will be used to keep saliva out of that area. An access hole will then be drilled […]

A recent study shows a link between gum disease and cancer in some postmenopausal women. According to the study, there’s a 14% higher risk of older women with periodontal disease developing several different types of cancer. The study said older women with gum disease were three times more likely to develop esophageal cancer than women that did not have gum disease. The study showed postmenopausal women with gum disease were also at a higher risk for breast, gallbladder, melanoma and lung cancer. Gum Disease And Cancer Researchers said proper oral hygiene and preventing and treating periodontal disease were important for cancer prevention. Previous research showed a link between women with gum disease who smoked and an increased risk of lung, breast and gallbladder cancer. Studies have also shown non-smoking women with gum disease tend to be more susceptible to melanoma and several other types of cancer. Poor Oral Hygiene A Cause Researchers were not sure why gum disease seems to put people at greater risk for cancer. Some speculate that bacteria in the oral cavity may lead to local and systemic inflammation through inhalation, ingestion and bacteria going through oral tissue into the bloodstream. Further research on the link between […]

Imagine your child is about to get his or her picture taken, and they are asked to say cheese. However, your child is too embarrassed to show his or her teeth. However with proper cleaning, your child might be able to flash a beautiful, healthy set of teeth. This illustrates how important it is to take care of your teeth before the school year begins. There are several advantages to having your children’s teeth professionally cleaned before resuming the school year. A thorough cleaning will benefit children and college students, and help them to understand the value of having strong, healthy teeth. If we take care of our teeth the proper way, we will add these rewards to looking our best: Being able to eat our food with comfort. Being able to communicate clearly with one another. Good dental treatment will help kids to continue growing up with healthy teeth. Regular cleaning appointments can help convey a clear understanding of the importance of their teeth to kids. The best way to start the school year out right, from a dental point of view, is to have any check-ups and cleaning appointments completed before the term begins. This prevents children from […]

Many different types of dental x-ray images can easily be obtained. A dentist uses various x-rays in order to look for specific problems or just to check up on the general health of the teeth of his patient. A Bitewing Radiograph is used to get an accurate x-ray of the upper and lower teeth from the side of the mouth. A Periapical Radiograph can show several teeth as well as their roots and the jawbone they are in. A complete series of x-rays usually includes a combination of both the bitewing and periapical radiographs, and a Panoramic Radiograph shows all of the teeth and portions of the jaw. These types of x-rays are taken digitally and can be saved to a computer where they can be transmitted electronically to another dental office or an insurance provider. Intraoral and Extraoral X-Rays There are two types of dental x-rays. There are intraoral which are the x-rays that are taken inside the mouth, and there are extraoral which are the x-rays taken outside of the mouth. Intraoral X-rays involve placing a sensor inside of the mouth and are the most common type of X-rays taken at the dental office. These types of x-rays […]

Our smiles are one of the ways we are seen by the world. Clean, white teeth are a sign of health and cleanliness. No one wants to smile with stained, unhealthy teeth. Understanding the different kinds of stains and discolorations is an important part of your decision in teeth whitening. Deciding to Whiten There are different kinds of stains and discolorations that could require a dental visit instead of a tooth whitening product. First and foremost, before any of these procedures are undertaken you should schedule a cleaning at your dental office. You also want to ensure that any cavities or gum problems you might have are addressed before you start any tooth whitening processes. If you do whiten before seeing your dental provider you could cause yourself pain and bigger problems. What Makes Up A Tooth? First, understanding what makes up your tooth helps to understand what process you will use. Your tooth is enamel on the outside and this is where the whitening takes place. The next level of the tooth under the enamel is the dentin, then the pulp and all those lovely nerves that can wreck havoc when you get a toothache. It is important to […]

A root canal is the process of cleaning out the compromised tissue, debris and contaminates and filling and sealing off the space inside a tooth which was originally occupied by the nerve or pulp tissue. The process resolves internal problems with the tooth by eliminating irritants and bacteria and stopping any infection. It also promotes effective healing within the tooth and of the surrounding tissue. Root canal treatment can resolve nerve-related problems like an acutely inflamed, dying, or dead nerve. What Causes The Problem When the pulp inside the tooth becomes inflamed or infected the dentist may recommend a root canal to save the tooth. The inflammation or infection may be caused by several different issues. They include: Deep tooth decay Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth Traumatic damage like cracks, chips or root fractures Gum disease The Root Canal Process This is what you can expect when having a root canal done: Step One Local anesthesia is injected at the base of the infected tooth to numb it and the surrounding tissue. Step Two A dental dam is then put in place to isolate the infected tooth and create a sterile environment for the procedure. Step Three A […]

Your teeth deserve maintenance and hygienic treatments to improve their health and resilience against bacteria. Teeth make up an important part of a person’s hygiene practice. Just like the skin, the teeth can also indicate the age of a person. The efforts people put in to keep the skin healthy and glowing should also apply to practicing good oral hygiene. What are Sealants and How Do They Work? Sealants are a dental procedure which involve a special plastic coating being applied on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This is usually done for back teeth (premolars and molars), however it can be done for other teeth as well. Sealants function to prevent tooth decay. They form a protective layer over the enamel of each tooth by bonding into the depressions and grooves of the teeth. Although brushing and flossing are effective ways to remove food particles that are deposited onto the back and the sides of the teeth, sealants are proactive and do the job more efficiently. They effectively seal out plaque and food to ensure tooth decay does not occur at all. Who are Sealants Recommended for? There’s a greater likelihood of developing tooth decay in the depressions and […]

Dental X-rays are quite routine but very important for both dentists and patients. Dental X-rays help the dentist to pinpoint problem areas within the teeth and gums. Dental X-rays can help the dentist identify teeth that need fillings or filling replacement. Therefore, Dental X-rays are critical for evaluation as well as treatment purposes. Margin of Safety Regarding Dental X-Rays Many have wondered whether or not dental X-rays are really safe. Much has been made about X-rays and radiation over the years. Of course, it is common knowledge that long term exposure to radiation can have serious health consequences. Radiation can damage bodily organs and it can contribute to the development of certain cancers. Dental X-rays only use a small amount of radiation. Therefore, the patient is only exposed to minimal amounts of radiation for a few seconds or until the X-rays are complete. In addition, most dentists do supply led aprons and other protective measures to protect patients from experiencing more radiation exposure than necessary. You can always inquire if your dentist does have any protective covering that you can possibly wear while dental X-rays are being taken. Type of Radiation Used During Dental X-Rays The type of radiation omitted […]

Dental sealants and dental fillings have two different purposes. Both have been designed to improve dental patients’ overall oral health, but they are not the same. Dental Sealants Dental sealants are used to prevent tooth decay. A dental sealant is a plastic-like coating that is placed on the surface of your molars where chewing takes place. Molars have deep grooves in their surfaces. These surfaces are called pits and fissures. Dental sealants are used on molars because they are more likely to decay because of the pits and fissures. The fissures in the molars can be hard to access when brushing and flossing, since they are deep in the tooth and very small. Sometimes fissures can be smaller than an average sized tooth brush bristle, which is why they are so hard to clean. Having dental sealants applied is a great way to avoid cavities and prevent fillings. How are Dental Sealants Applied? Having dental sealants applied by your dental professional usually takes only a few minutes, and is a quick and painless procedure. First, the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and dried completely. Then the sealant will be applied to the tooth. Once this happens, the liquid sealant will move […]

Screenings can be scary and sometimes stressful. Knowing what to expect can help you feel more relaxed. Let’s face it, you don’t need any extra stress on exam day. Here are some tips on what to expect at an oral cancer screening exam. First Things First The dentist that you use is the most important part of the process. When you have the exam performed, you need to know that you are good hands. This will eliminate most of the stress of the unknown. A screening is simply a step to ensure that your health is not in danger. In this case, it’s screening for oral cancer. Having a precautionary screening can save your life. It allows you to be pro-active and to handle any issues before they become serious. The Exam During the exam itself, the tissues in the oral cavity and throat will be carefully examined. It is a quick exam which includes a visual evaluation. Anything that looks different from the past is considered something to further explore in more tests. This type of exam is important to have whenever you go in for a dentist visit. All dentists should examine your mouth for abnormalities during each […]

Bruxism is the medical term for teeth grinding. Most everyone will have an occasional bout of this, probably without even noticing it, and that is normal. However, if teeth grinding becomes a habit, or an unconscious activity you can’t control, then you could suffer from eventual tooth damage or oral health problems due to the problem. For this reason, it is important to be able to recognize the symptoms of teeth grinding and take countermeasures in order to prevent such problems. Recognizing Symptoms of Teeth Grinding It is hard to know what is happening to your body during sleep due to the reduced consciousness, and since teeth grinding is most apt to occur during that time, it may be going unnoticed in many people. However, if you’ve been grinding your teeth you may experience symptoms once you’re awake, such as a dull and constant headache, or a sore jaw in the morning. For many people, their partner is often the one who notices teeth grinding by seeing or hearing it, and can bring it to attention. Visit a Professional If you have a reason to suspect that you may be grinding, either because your partner has mentioned it or because […]

Almost half of the population in the United States is dealing with some form of gum disease. This statistic may be surprising to you but gum disease is actually one of the most common reasons that a person will visit the dentist’s office this year. You may not even know that this is something you are dealing with although there are some very early warning signs. Let’s take a look at some of the earliest signs of gum disease so you know what to look for. Bleeding Gums If you properly brush your teeth and are not doing so too hard or brushing the gum area too much, you should never see blood when you spit into the sink after brushing. The same goes for the process of flossing. Regular flossing is very important because as food gets stuck in between your teeth, this can cause your gums to become inflamed. As bacteria multiplies in your mouth, the bleeding will only become worse. In addition to bleeding, you may also notice that your gums are red, swollen, painful, or sensitive. Tooth sensitivity occurs as your gums can recede due to the issue. Don’t slack on brushing or flossing because of […]

Proper brushing is the most important step in the oral care process. Nylon bristle toothbrushes were created by DuPont in the 1930s and are still used today. 8 decades later, there are a wide variety of toothbrush brands and types on the market that can make it difficult to choose. You can choose between soft, medium and hard bristles. Toothbrushes also can be manual or electric. Most dentist recommend soft bristles, but it is best to check with your dentist to see what type is best for you. Soft Bristles The most commonly recommended and used variety, soft bristle toothbrushes pose the least threat to damaging tooth enamel and gums. Some people who have sensitive teeth or other issues may have to use an extra soft tooth brush to prevent bleeding or other issues. Professionals agree that soft toothbrushes do the best job of removing plaque and debris. A popular misconception is that a harder brush cleans better, but it is simply not true. Any minimal gains in cleaning will be wiped away by the damage caused by hard bristles. Medium Bristles Toothbrushes with medium bristles basically fall in the middle of stiffness between soft and hard. Medium brushes don’t clean […]

Toothache can refer to any pain near the teeth. While a toothache is typically the result of decay, there are several factors that can cause toothache pain. A toothache may present itself in several ways. The pain can be mild or severe, constant or may come and go without warning. Eating or drinking, especially hot or cold food, can increase the severity of the pain. The pain may be worse at night, especially if you are lying down. A toothache will often begin with a lost or broken filling. It may be difficult to tell if the pain is coming from an upper or lower tooth. Often, if a lower molar is affected it may feel as if you have an earache. A toothache in an upper tooth may feel as if it is coming from the sinuses. If you are in this situation and need fillings in San Marcos, Larry Molenda Can Help. In this article we explore causes for toothaches as well as how to treat them before you get in to see the dentist. Specific Causes of Toothaches Typically, a toothache occurs when the dental pulp, the innermost layer of the tooth, becomes inflamed. Dental pulp is […]

When there’s a large gap between teeth, often caused by the loss of a tooth, a dental bridge can be used to fill that gap. Two or more crowns are placed on the teeth that sit on either side of the gap. Those crowns allow for replacement teeth to be placed within the gap, filling the area and giving you a beautiful smile! The replacement teeth can be made from a variety of materials, varying in cost and performance, such as gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination depending on your preference and your dentist’s recommendation. The Process During the initial visit, the teeth which will hold the crowns for the bridge to be attached to will be prepared in order to hold those crowns. Some of the tooth enamel might need to be removed in order for the crown to fit perfectly. Following that, a mold of the teeth is made, so that the lab can use it to create the crowns, bridge, and implants to perfectly fit your mouth. You will also be given a temporary bridge to protect your teeth and gums. A second visit is usually required in which the actual bridge is placed and tweaked until […]

The Importance of Teeth Your teeth are more than just a pretty smile. There are four main types of teeth: Incisors, Canines, Premolars, and Molars. Each type of tooth has specialized characteristics for the job that it does in the mouth. All the teeth working together also have an important role. They help chew and digest food; the smaller the food particles, the better the nutrients are absorbed. The shape of your mouth is determined by the way your lips rest on your teeth. Your teeth also help with speech and pronunciation. Have you ever heard someone speak with a lisp? This can be caused by the location of their teeth in relation to their tongue. When Teeth Form Did you know that your teeth begin to form before you are born? Development of teeth begins during the second trimester of pregnancy. Your first set of teeth goes by many names: deciduous teeth, milk teeth, primary teeth, or more commonly known as baby teeth. Your first tooth will erupt around six months of age. Tooth eruption happens in a symmetrical manner meaning the left and right side will grow at the same time. Children being to loose their baby teeth […]

You already know that you need to take good care of your teeth, but taking care of your gums is equally, if not more, important. Gums are the support system for your teeth, bones, and connecting tissue. Without healthy gums, your teeth wouldn’t have a place to thrive. Unhealthy gums could lead to gum disease caused by plaque that builds up on the gum line. However, there are many preventative steps you can take to keep your gums healthy. Floss Frequently Flossing at least once a day can help protect the health of your gums. Flossing removes plaque beyond the toothbrush’s reach. When flossing, make sure you don’t push into the gums because this could damage them. To learn about flossing properly, visit our article Proper Flossing Technique Don’t be Afraid of the Dentist Get regular dental checkups and cleaning every 6-8 months. Professional cleanings are the only way to remove tartar. Because gum disease is usually painless unless advanced, regular checkups enable detection of the early stages. This allows the symptoms to be treated and could reverse the damage. Stop Smoking Don’t smoke. If you do smoke, consider quitting. Smoking has a strong association with the onset of gum […]

Even the least fearful among us tend to have a few phobias hidden within their psyches. And for some, dentists and orthodontists tend to elicit a few. The fear of dentists and dentistry work is known as odontophobia. It is perfectly natural, and luckily not something that you have to deal with if you feel like you can’t handle it. There are a lot of options for those who can’t handle a trip to the dentist. The bulk of them revolve around sedation dentistry, of which there are quite a number of benefits and a few different ways to go about it. No Need for a Specialist Physically, sedation works by administering sedative inhalants (inhaled sedation), like nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”), and keeping the patient relaxed and comfortable, potentially slightly asleep, or “sedated” enough to not worry about the ongoing care. There is also oral sedation (which takes the form of a pill), IV sedation, and also general anesthesia. In sedation dentistry, but especially for general anesthesia, the range from conscious, to sedated, to unconscious, to respiratory depression (which can be fatal) is a narrow window. That is the reason why anesthesiology is an entire field of medicine which requires […]

Dental Fillings in San Marcos, TX Fillings have been around for a long time, and with it, a large amount of options have resulted. Originally, while cavities were untreatable, problem teeth could be replaced with fakes. These fakes are the reason that we think of George Washington with wooden teeth, or when we think of pirates from the middle of the last millennium, we think of golden teeth. These days, there are a bit more tasteful options (though gold fillings are still in use, and have some practical benefits). Several options make it clear that you have a filling, while some are designed to be the color of teeth. We will be going over the benefits and types below, as well as some of the basics of the operation. With all of them, the decayed tooth area is removed, and then they use a filling to replace the area and fill in the removed area. A local anesthetic will be applied, which will numb you from feeling any pain in the area. A lot of people have fear about operations like these, but with a qualified dentist the local anesthetic should sufficiently numb you to not feel anything during the […]

Those with sensitive teeth know the struggle of having to deal with being uncomfortable while trying to enjoy their favorite things. Teeth can be sensitive to hot, cold, sweet, or sour. You may have adjusted the way you eat or drink to avoid sensitive areas. It doesn’t have to be that way, however. There are many ways to relieve or alleviate tooth sensitivity at home or with the help of your dentist. A Variety of Causes There isn’t a cure all for all causes of tooth sensitivity. The cause of the sensitivity needs to be known in order to have the correct solution. You can’t take a throat lozenge for a headache caused by allergies. The same goes for teeth sensitivity. One remedy may work for one cause, but not another. Worn Enamel Prevention Generalized sensitivity can be caused by worn down enamel. When the enamel is gone, nerve endings are exposed. Preventative methods are the best way to keep this from happening or getting worse. To prevent damage, don’t brush too hard and use a soft bristled brush to ensure a good cleaning without damaging the tooth’s surface. Avoid acidic foods and drinks such as soda, sticky candy, and […]

It can be difficult to maintain healthy, sparkling teeth. Often, as we go about our days we overlook the importance of our teeth. If we’re downing cups of coffee by the liter, chomping into a greasy burger, or drinking bottles of wine at a dinner party, our teeth can feel it. Here’s an easy to follow list of tips for reducing the risk of tooth erosion, the loss of tooth structure, in order to keep your smile shining. Drinking Less Coffee This one might hit close to home for all the 6am warriors out there, but don’t worry, you can still enjoy your cup of joe and keep your teeth happy at the same time. Coffee is a well-known culprit for leaving our teeth stained, as well as giving us the unattractive quality of ‘coffee breath’. It’s important to drink your caffeine in moderation, and if possible keeping consumption levels down to 2-3 cups a day. A great technique for combating stained teeth is brushing after your coffee. Ensuring you remove any coffee remnants from your teeth really goes a long way. Tea is an excellent alternative if you decide to avoid coffee, but keep in mind it can still […]

Dental implants are changing the way we speak and eat, literally. Gone are the days of dentures and denture adhesive creams that created many embarrassing moments for artificial teeth wearers everywhere. Today, dental implants are revolutionizing dentures and bridges in a way that is restoring confidence in denture wearers across the world. What Are Dental Implants? Dental implants are tooth roots created with titanium posts. The post extends from under the gum line which connects to a metal implant and then leads to a slight protrusion outside of the gums. The steel posts are then used to anchor artificial teeth or bridges. Dental Implants are designed to last a long time and are not a temporary fix. The result is teeth that look and function like regular teeth and a natural-looking smile. How are Dental Implants Installed? The installation of dental implants requires a surgical procedure. For starters, healthy gums and bone structure in the jaw are a must. Oral surgeons insert the implants near the jawbone in the first phase of surgery. After a couple of months, a process occurs that fuses the implant with the jawbone. This fusion process ensures that implants do not slip or move around. […]

What are Wisdom Teeth? Wisdom teeth are your four back molars and are relatively superfluous teeth as they are so far back in the mouth that they do not aid in the chewing process. The teeth generally erupt between ages 17 and 20 and represent the final stages of dental development in a human. While they are a natural part of your mouth, they can cause some dental problems if not addressed. Why Might My Wisdom Teeth Need to be Removed? Wisdom teeth only need to be removed if they are causing you problems. If the wisdom tooth grows in at an angle it can cause damage to the surrounding teeth. This can lead to additional issues, such as gum irritation, bleeding, jaw aches, and headaches. Sometimes wisdom teeth do not always fully erupt and can cause a patient discomfort. The only way to alleviate the pain is to remove the tooth. You do not really need your wisdom teeth, so if you are having any health problems as a result, then it’s usually best to see a dentist. Is it Safe to Keep My Wisdom Teeth? If your wisdom teeth erupt straight and cause no issues to the teeth […]

Dental issues can arise at any time of day. If you have a San Marcos dental filling emergency during working hours, you can call your dentist right away to see if he or she can set an appointment for you immediately. For acute dental problems, it’s usually best to be seen by a professional as soon as possible in order to save the injured tooth if there is one, and to get you relief from any pain you’re experiencing. If your emergency is after hours, you’ll need to check your dentist’s emergency recommendations. If your dental office has a dentist on-call, call and see what he or she suggests for your situation. If you’re not sure if your dental problem is an emergency or can wait, keep reading for more information Severe Bleeding If you experience severe pain or consistent bleeding, visit an emergency room. Though most emergency rooms do not have a dentist on duty, the medical professionals there can help stop heavy bleeding and help relieve severe pain. As your ER doctor will likely advise, if your issue does require the attention of a dental professional, you should follow up with your dentist after the immediate problems have […]

When something affects the appearance of your teeth, such as stained teeth or a chipped tooth, dental bonding could be the solution. Dental bonding is a relatively simple procedure used to make minor dental repairs. During the procedure a composite material, colored to match the teeth, is applied to a tooth and shaped to correct a defect. Once shaped, the composite is hardened and polished so that it matches the rest of the teeth. There are several benefits to dental bonding. Color Matching One of the great benefits of dental bonding is that the color or the composite material can be made to match the patient’s teeth. This is especially helpful when dental bonding is used to correct defects on the front teeth. Our front teeth are clearly visible when we smile, so having a composite color that matches the neighboring teeth keeps smiles looking natural. Tooth colored bonding can also be used for fillings instead of silver colored fillings. Lifespan Many patients turn to dental bonding because it has a decent lifespan with relatively little care needed. The best practices for caring for dental bonding are about the same as those for your regular daily oral hygiene. Daily brushing […]

Very few people look forward to their annual dental visits, but making going to the dentist a priority is crucial to healthy teeth and gums. Regular dental visits may not always be the most pleasant of experiences, but there are many important reasons to visit your dentist regularly. Annual Cleanings No one is perfect at brushing and flossing regularly, but even the most diligent people can easily miss those hard to reach places. This can lead to plaque building up and becoming tartar, which is difficult to remove. Regular a teeth cleaning in San Marcos helps to get rid of plaque and tartar early. Prevention can mean avoiding a lot of headache later on. Fixing Bad Habits There are many types of habits you may fall into that have serious health implications for your mouth and gums, and you may not even realize it. At your dentist visit, your dentist can detect early damage caused by things like too much caffeine, smoking, or grinding your teeth. These habits can then be modified in order to help prevent further damage. Prevent Gum Disease While the dangers of gum disease may seem decades away, the reality is that years and years of […]

TMJ Disorders: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment The Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) plays the role of a sliding hinge by connecting jawbone to the skull. Everyone has a joint on each side of their jaw. TMJ disorder causes pain in the muscles and jaw joint that control jaw movement. The specific cause of a TMJ disorder is normally hard to determine. The pain could be due to a mixture of factors such as jaw injury, arthritis, and genetics. Also, some people with jaw pain tend to grind or clench their teeth even though not everyone develops TMJ disorder as a result of that. In some situations, the discomfort and pain linked with TMJ disorders is short-term and can be relieved with nonsurgical treatments or self-managed care. Normally, surgery is the last resort after conventional measures have failed. Symptoms TMJ disorders have different signs and symptoms which include: Tenderness and pain in your jawPain in one or both temporomandibular jointsAching pain around and inside your earPain or difficulty when chewingAching facial painJoint locking, making it hard to close or open the mouth Also, TMJ disorders can cause a grating sensation or clicking sound when you chew or open your mouth. Millions of Americans rely on a morning cup of java to get their day started, but many people don’t realize the impact that even a single cup of coffee each day can have on their smile. It not only affects the appearance of teeth, but can also cause dental health problems if certain preventative actions aren’t taken. How Does Coffee Affect Teeth? The most common, and most noticeable, effect that coffee has on teeth is staining. It happens over time and eventually turns your pearly whites to a less than appealing shade of yellow. It also causes teeth to lose their natural luster. This is due to tannin, a reddish colored acid, that occurs naturally in coffee and other types of food and drink. Many people use creamer, milk or sugar to flavor their coffee, which makes it more delicious but doesn’t do teeth any favors at all. In fact, these popular coffee additives make staining even more pronounced because they encourage the growth of bacteria. Oral bacteria can cause serious problems, such as plaque buildup, erosion of tooth enamel, brittle teeth, and eventually cavities. Do I Have to Give Up My Daily Coffee? In short, no. There are steps […]

Reasons You May Need a Filling There are different reasons why you may need to get a filling or fillings. Dental fillings make it possible to save your teeth, and they are used for much more than simply filling a space that a cavity leaves behind. Typically a filling will last anywhere for five years to a couple of decades and is often used when cavities form and to the decay sets in. A filing will seal up the holes that are left behind by the drilling out of any tooth decay that was there before. You may also need to get a filing or fillings if you grind your teeth. Teeth can fracture for different reasons and fillings are useful if you have a fractured tooth. You could fracture your tooth in many different ways. You could fall, or you could be in an auto accident or even in a sporting event. Any type of contact made with the mouth area can quite easily cause a fracture to one or more of your teeth. Aging can also cause teeth to become more brittle, and they can break off more easily. Fillings are an effective solution for after you have […]

Taking care of your teeth is more than just having a pretty smile. Healthy teeth and good oral hygiene are important to your general health. You may not be able to eat all of the nutritious foods that you eat if you have sore, broken or decaying teeth. Gum disease can lead to more serious issues including endocarditis, a potentially life-threatening infection of the heart. It is far easier to prevent cavities than it is to treat them, so learn these simple oral hygiene tips so your teeth stay healthy. Brush Well, Brush Often One of the easiest and best ways to protect your teeth is to brush at least twice per day. Brushing immediately after waking up not only gives you fresher breath to start the day but also whisks away bacteria that have settled on the surface of your teeth overnight. You should also be brushing after every meal with one caveat. Instead of brushing immediately, wait for around thirty minutes or so if possible. If you can’t brush at all rinse your mouth with water or make the last part of your meal hard cheese or raisins which can protect your teeth from harmful, cavity causing agents. […]

We all know that flossing is recommended. A consistent and appropriate regimen of brushing and flossing helps to protect and preserve our teeth, but what most people don’t know is that there are a lot of different flossing mediums out there. Not all floss is the same and there are different reasons to use each kind in different circumstances. What Does Floss Do for My Teeth? Let’s start off with what flossing actually does. In the most simplistic of descriptions, it removes left over plaque and food debris from between the teeth. In addition to this, it also helps to allow the fluoride present in most toothpastes to breach the gap in between teeth. Beyond knowing that, you need to know what floss is good for what scenarios. The Many Kinds of Floss If you’ve ever gone and bought floss at the store, you’ve probably only noticed three main differences between the different products. The flavoring, the brand, and whether or not it’s a wand or a simple roll of floss. What you probably didn’t know was that floss has many different subcategories besides those. Here’s a profile for each kind. Keep in mind that most products often combine several […]

When someone breaks, chips, or loses a tooth it is important to know how to render the proper first aid. Dental or Medical Emergency? Damaging a tooth by biting something hard is a dental emergency. Bruising, swelling and bleeding of the face or head is a medical emergency. If the victim exhibits symptoms of a possible brain injury like loss of consciousness, bleeding from the mouth of ears, or disorientation it is a medical emergency that supersedes the dental emergency. Broken And Chipped Tooth First Aid After someone breaks or chips a tooth their mouth should be rinsed out with warm water to remove debris from the tooth fragment. Bleeding can be staunched using a piece of moist gauze. A cold compress can be applied to ease pain and swelling. Be careful not to touch the tooth fragment with the cold compress. An over the counter pain reliever can also be taken. Transporting Tooth Fragments Whether the tooth is chipped or broken a dentist should be contacted immediately. Any fragment or fragments of the tooth should be taken to the dentist. The pieces of the tooth must be kept in milk during transport. Treating a Chipped Tooth Minor chipping can […]

Do you grind your teeth? The medical community calls excessive jaw clenching or teeth grinding “bruxism.” Here we’ll look at the relationship between bruxism and TMJ Disorder (also known as temporomandibular joint disorder). Grinding Teeth Many people grind their teeth when they are frustrated. Unfortunately, if you grind your teeth constantly, it could wear down your tooth enamel or cause jaw problems. Doctors believe that bruxism may afflict anywhere from 8% to 31% of the population. Experts have divided bruxism into two categories: 1. Sleeping or 2. Awake. Each instance can be caused by stress, genetics, or Parkinson’s disease. Here are some of the most common symptoms of bruxism: HeadachesEar AchesTooth WearCrenated TongueHypersensitive TeethAching Jaw MusclesTMJ Disorder Tooth wear (also known as attrition) can remove the protective enamel on your teeth, revealing the softer dentin layer below. Eventually, the tooth could fracture due to bruxism. Sleeping Bruxism Sleep studies have shown that 86% of sleep bruxism is during sleep arousal, which is a sudden change in the sleep stage depth. Increased heart rates, respiratory rates, and leg spasms might be associated with nocturnal teeth grinding. The central nervous system may be using dreams to deal with stress that took place […]

Your teeth are very strong, but if you eat certain foods or drink certain beverages, your teeth might become overly sensitive. Below, we’ll go over how acidic foods affect your teeth. We will also include a list of foods which you might want to avoid. Healthy Teeth Increase Quality of Life Teeth are tools that allow you to chew, masticate and chop large pieces of food into smaller morsels. These smaller morsels are easier for your body to digest. Babies start without teeth and can’t handle tougher foods. Adults have a variety of different teeth types to process their food. Your incisors have a small, sharp penetrating surface for grabbing food. Canines can tear large pieces of food from the back of your mouth. The molars and premolars have a flatter surface that is used to crush and grind. Healthy teeth allow you to enjoy a healthier quality of life. You can eat what you want and grind it properly. You won’t have debilitating toothaches. Acid Erodes Tooth Enamel Scientists have created a Power of Hydrogen (pH) standard to measure whether something is an acid or base. This pH scale runs from a low pH 0 (stomach acid) to a […]

Braces used to be a thing that mainly only children and teens had put on their teeth. Adults nowadays are having braces installed in order to correct teeth issues such as bent teeth, large gaps, or bad bites. Around one million adults in North America now have braces, and that number is expected to continue to grow. A Few Things To Keep In Mind Before Getting Braces First, in adults, the bones have stopped their growth which includes teeth. This means that there are a number of structural changes that braces can’t correct and for which surgery is needed. Second, you will need to wear braces for a longer period of time than a child or teen would because it’s harder to get teeth properly aligned in an adult mouth due to more rigidity. Third, you might need to include a periodontist in addition to your dentist and orthodontist as they can make sure gum disease won’t be an issue. Avoiding Serious Issues By Getting Braces Having misaligned teeth or a crossbite can lead to problematic issues such as food getting stuck between your teeth leading to decay. It also can lead to the buildup of plaque which can lead […]

Recent evidence has been released showing a positive correlation between a bacteria found in gum disease and Alzheimer’s. Gum disease is characterized by red, swollen, painful, and/or bleeding gums. Loose teeth and infection may also be present in gum disease. Symptoms of Alzheimer’s include memory loss, difficulty learning new things, difficulty with language, and carrying out multi-step tasks. A hypothesis is that the disease is able to reach the brain due to the close proximity of the upper jaw and the brain. The Trend For years it has been suspected that there might be a link due to the fact that a significant amount of autopsies done on those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s also had various levels of gum disease. They also found that the risk for Alzheimer’s doubled if the deceased had a diagnosis of gum disease for over ten years. Several skeptics have thought that there is no way the two could be related due to gum disease being an infection of the mouth and the brain being a completely different biological component. The Research An independent and privately funded research group, Cortexyme, focuses on degenerative diseases and disorders including Alzheimer’s. They were able to isolate a strain of […]

If you haven’t tried Kombucha, you probably know someone who has, or have seen it advertised at your local deli or coffee shop. So, what is this drink with the funky name that seems to be one of the latest crazes? What is Kombucha? Kombucha is a drink made by fermenting black or green tea using bacteria and yeast. It is then sweetened and/or flavored resulting in a fizzy probiotic drink. Many people praise about its suspected health benefits. Adding the fermentation process to tea packs it with yummy things for your gut biome such as probiotics, enzymes, and organic acids along with the naturally occurring antioxidants. People say it helps with decreasing bloating, as well as assisting with weight loss, increasing energy, and enhancing moods. Kombucha’s Acidity Because of the fermentation process, the not-so-acidic tea becomes a drink that has a high level of acidity. For comparison, water has an average pH level of 7, which makes it a neutral substance on the pH scale, while tea has a pH level of about 6 and vinegar has a pH level of 2. What the pH scale measures is the acidity or alkalinity level in a water soluble substance. Kombucha […]

Many people have wondered about charcoal toothpaste. Charcoal is currently very popular and is being used in a variety of different areas. You’ll find it in many applications including facials, vitamins, soap, and even shampoos. Recently, charcoal toothpaste is gaining in popularity for dental care. What is ‘Activated’ Charcoal? Charcoal is the substance left after something such as the wood in your fireplace has burned and is naturally a porous substance. When this charcoal is treated with gas the pores become larger and increase in number. This improves its ability to absorb impurities and is called ‘activated charcoal.’ Because charcoal has the ability to absorb impurities and grab foreign matter you’ll find it commonly used in water filters. It is so good at grabbing impurities doctors use activated charcoal to treat patients that experience overdoses or poisoning. What Charcoal Toothpaste Can Do For You Activated charcoal toothpaste can clean your teeth by removing plaque and stains, and will even whiten your teeth and improve your breath. It sounds pretty good, but what kinds of concerns or dangers are there? Charcoal Toothpaste Dental Concerns Charcoal is an abrasive substance. While the concept of using mouthwash should be relatively simple, the truth is that there is more to it than most people realize. There are right and wrong ways to use your mouthwash that you may not be fully aware of. While using mouthwash incorrectly is not immediately detrimental to your overall health, it can have an adverse impact on the management of your oral health. Due to the inconsistency in the information regarding mouthwash out there today, here is a simple and clear list of common every day do’s and don’ts that you should adhere to with your mouthwash use. DON’T Assume That All Mouthwash Contains Fluoride In a perfect world, it would make sense that all mouthwash formulas include an optimum quantity of fluoride in them. Unfortunately, fluoride is not included in all mouthwash products, and you will be wasting your time and money by neglecting to check on this. Fluoride does not directly remove plaque off the teeth, but instead, it functions by protecting your teeth from the harmful acids that bacterial plaque produces. It helps to protect against cavities by incorporating itself into your tooth enamel. Fluoride not only helps to prevent tooth decay, but it […]

Everyone craves to have that beautiful and stunning smile. A pleasant smile radiates some warmth when given to people in certain situations. However, this may not be the case if you are struggling with poor dental health. Some oral problems such as bad breath and dry mouth tend to take away a person’s self-esteem and confidence. On the other hand, colored or stained teeth are considered an embarrassing situation. However, this should not cause you any trauma because there are various options of bringing back your bright smile. Tooth whitening is the most common, and it involves cosmetic dentistry. The procedure offers two preferences; in-office-based and at-home care teeth bleaching. This article is all about the latter. At-home care teeth bleaching involves the use of bleach usually applied on a set of trays for your teeth. You must visit the dentist to obtain a set of trays. Home application products are available over the counter, and the most common are carbamide or hydrogen peroxides. Nonetheless, the results from the at-home solution may not be as good as those from the in-office-based system. The office-based system uses a stronger solution unlike the peroxides, which is weaker. This means you have to […]

After you lose your baby teeth, the teeth that grow in are those that you’ll be stuck with for the rest of your life. There isn’t another set that will magically grow in if you lose an adult tooth. Because of that, it’s vital that you maintain excellent oral health. While there are always measures to make up for missing teeth, the first line of defense should always be to protect your own natural teeth. This article will offer up a few tips on how you can prevent tooth decay and maintain a brilliant and beautiful smile. Regular Brushing Perhaps one of the most obvious methods of preventing tooth decay is to brush your teeth. However, how much you brush your teeth and for how long is just as important. Typically, you should brush your teeth twice a day. Preferably, you would brush your teeth every time you ate. Since that isn’t always the easiest of things to do for all people, brushing at least twice a day typically prevents tooth decay from occurring. Besides just brushing regularly, you also need to brush for the correct amount of time. With a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, you should brush your teeth […]

In today’s society, we are constantly having to bob and weave through the many layers of social standards that are ever changing. Some of these standards, like certain beauty standards, seem to ask a little too much of the members of our society. However, there are some social agreements that we seem to automatically adhere to when we decide to include ourselves in the voluntary aspects of that society. One of those social agreements is not having terrible breath. I know, I know. How dare I call out a biological occurrence that we might have little control over. I know that it might seem shallow, but identifying the root of your bad breath might actual address potentially serious health problems. Not only do most people want to interact with others without having to feel embarrassed, but we should all want to be aware of something that could help us be more aware of our personal health. Causes of Bad Breath One of the biggest causes of bad breath is bacteria. This can be a result of so many different things, but commonly, this bacteria is a result of food particles left in and around your teeth causing a bad odor. […]
